Pellegrini takes European gold

Federica Pellegrini took 200m freestyle gold at the European Championships in Budapest.

The Italian added the European title to her Olympic and world crown with a championship record victory.

Germany's Silke Lippok was leading until the final length but faded to silver as Pellegrini's superior endurance allowed her to clock 1.55.45.

Denmark's Lotte Friis added the 1500m freestyle title to her 800m freestyle gold while Ireland's Grainne Murphy, who just missed out on a medal earlier this week, claiming silver.

Russia's Evgeny Korotyshkin won the 100m butterfly in a championship record 51.73 secs while Great Britain's Antony James came home eighth in the final.

Aliaksandra Herasimenia, of Belarus, won the 50m backstroke in a championship record 27.64. Russia's Stanislav Donets won the 200m backstroke in 1.57.18 while Italy's Fabio Scozzoli was a surprise winner in the 50m breaststroke, clocking 27.38 secs.

Russia's Yuliya Efimova looks the one to beat in Sunday's 50m breaststroke final but Britain's Kate Haywood was second quickest in the women's semi-finals.

Haywood has struggled with injury and loss of form at recent championships but was all smiles after clocking 31.24 secs.

Simon Burnett was also beaming after booking his place in the 50m freestyle as the sixth quickest qualifier, although France's Frederick Bousquet looks like he will take some beating.

After winning medals on everyday of the championship, there were no trips to the podium for British swimmers on Saturday but the final day's schedule looks encouraging for more success.

Ellen Gandy was second quickest into 200m butterfly final - which looks at the mercy of home favourite, Katinka Hosszu - but team-mate Jemma Lowe just missed out.

Great Britain's men's 4x200m freestyle quartet came close to a medal with Scot David Carry producing a storming swim on the third leg.

But team-mates Robbie Renwick, Ross Davenport and Robert Bale couldn't do enough to overcome bronze medallists France, while Russia took gold ahead of Germany in a championship record 7.06.71. The British team touched home in 7.11.00.
