Malta Cricket summer league weekend review

Over the weekend the Malta Cricket Summer league continued. The Saturday game between Melita C.C and Overseas C.C ended the first round of games from Division 1. 

The leaders Melita won the toss and elected to bat first. Joy Ghoseroy and Tony Slater opened the batting. Ghoseroy was first to go being bowled by Paul Bradley for six runs. Slater made ten runs before being caught.

The match defining innings came from Andy Naudi who scored fifty five runs from thirty balls including six fours and two sixes.

Darren Grech kept up his good batting in the league with eighteen runs before being bowled. Derek Ali made twenty three runs from eighteen balls including two fours and a six before being caught on the last ball of the innings. Greg Symons remained the unbeaten batsmen with two runs. 

Paul Bradley was the main wicket taker for the Overseas team while Phillip Burke and Alex Goddard both took a wicket each. The Melita team totalled 138 runs from their allotted overs.

 In reply the Overseas could only make eighty nine runs from their allotted overs. A fine spell of bowling from Gordon Hewitt had them in trouble. Hewitt took four wickets. Ian Pendelbury and Tony Slater both took two wickets while Darren Grech took a wicket. Junior Adam Caruana had his first two overs in league cricket and also Nadia Gosney had her first game of cricket as well as an over.

For the Overseas Paul Bradley capped of his bowling by also being the main run scorer for his team. He scored thirty seven runs including one six and two fours. Alex Goddard scored nine runs, Bryan Dalton eight runs, Pete Bradley seven runs and Sean Duffy six runs.

Melita earned eight points from the win while Overseas earned one point. The win has taken Melita twelve points clear of its nearest rival Marsa C.C.

 On Sunday the second division game between Gozo C.C and Mellieha C.C took place. Gozo batted first and totalled 109 runs with Malcolm Crabbe top scoring with thirty three runs and Ronnie Sacco making twenty two. Glen Tavilla took three wickets for the Mellieha side. In reply it was Tavilla’s devasting batting which had his side win the game.

He scored fifty seven runs from twenty three balls including three fours and four sixes. Mellieha have now played all their games and are on top of the ladder with twenty points. Gozo C.C are second with nine points and one game left to play, Betfair C.C are third with eight points and two games to play and RMG CC are yet to take any points with one game left to play.

 Next Sunday the game between Betfair C.C and RMG CC will be played starting 10:30 am.
