Bonello Spiteri and Galea take part in races abroad

Danica Bonello Spiteri and Dermot Galea have taken part in triathlon races in Hungary and the UK respectively earlier this month.

Bonello Spiteri took part in the Triathlon World Championships Final in Budapest, Hungary, on the 12th September where she placed 45th in her Age Group (25-29) and 1st in the Medical Doctors’ Group. Unsurprisingly, considering that this was the final of the World Championship series, there was a very strong field of athletes from all over the world.

In fact, her Group, which contained 82 athletes, was won by Andrea Steyn from the Republic of South Africa in a time of 1hr:55m:42s. Danica Bonello’s finish time of 2hrs:15m:14s is a personal best for her and augurs well for the upcoming National Triathlon Championships due to be held on Sunday 3rd October at the Salina Coast Road.

Dermot Galea took part in the Perranport Surf Triathlon in Cornwall, England, where the distances were Swim: 1km; Bike: 38km and Cycle: 7.5km. Despite the fact that the distances were slightly shorter than the established Olympic one, this was, in Galea’s own words, one of the toughest races he took part considering that the swim was held in the Atlantic where huge waves of up to 4m made progress difficult, while the run was practically all on the beach. With 71 finishers, Galea managed to finish in a creditable 10th placing Overall in a time of 1hr:58m:30s.

The Race was won by David Bartlett in a time of 1hr:51m:36s. Galea will be unable to defend the National Triathlon Championship, which he has won 9 times in the past, since he will be taking a sabbatical year from racing in order to pursue a university course in Loughbourough, England.
