Weightlifting: Preparations for Mediterranean Cup in full swing
The Malta Weightlifting has successfully organized a test event competition in preparation for the upcoming 9th edition of the Mediterranean Cup that will be taking place in Malta from 19th to 22nd March.
In this event, the athletes that particularly stood out were the female categories, setting 13 new national records (NR). Krista Camilleri winning the overall with 169 points lifting the total of 133kg and break 8 (NR) in the 69kg category, she was followed by Pamela Psaila scoring 164 points lifting the total of 120kg and set a new (NR) in the 63kg category. Third place was won by Sarah Grixti with 145 points; she had to battle very hard against her opponent Dorianne Attard that finished with 144points. However Grixti manage to set up new 4 (NR) in the juniors +75 Category and in youths 69kg Category, she lifted the total of 137kg.
A big number of male athletes also participated, and as a result, were divided into three competitions. Winner of this competition was Kyle Micallef lifting the total of 240kg, followed by Noel Coleiro's 235kg and with Rodmar Pulis' 215kg total taking third place.
This competition was the last chance for the athletes to qualify for the upcoming international competitions. The athletes chosen to form team Malta for the Mediterranean cup are Kyle Micallef, Ryan Agius, Noel Coleiro, Rodmar Pulis, Krista Camilleri and Pamela Psaila. One of the advantages of organizing a international event locally is that was selected the second team for the event and the selected athletes are Owen Bugeja, Jovan Reljic, Daryl Psaila, Matthew Camilleri, Sarah Grixti, Dorianne Attard and Hayley Mizzi.
The (MWA) is in the final preparation now to hold the Med Cup in Malta, and the countries that already registered their teams to participate are Spain, France, San Marino, Italy, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Slovenia, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Egypt and Tunisia.
The Teams start arriving in Malta on the 18th when they will dedicate time for training with Maltese athletes. On the occasion a seminar will take place at the Plaza Hotel Sliema on the 20th from 16.00 to 17.00. Subject (NEW APPROACHES AND THERAPEUTIC PROSPECTS IN WEIGHTLIFTING) by Dr. Michele Attolico M.W.C. Saturday 21st is the most eventful day, at the Cottonera sports complex the first competition of the day for men starts at 9.00 followed by second one at 11.30. At 14.00 there will be a short break from competitions but for the present public there will be a flag demonstration from the participating countries, some short speeches for the occasion and a spectacular show from local Rhythmic gymnasts.
Competitions will continue from 15.00 with the female category, followed by the last competition for men at 17.30. At the end of the competition there will presentations of winners.
This event is a good occasion for the public to come and support the local talent and watch a good level of performances from various athletes who have won several titles in the previous year.
