This weekend The Malta Weightlifting Association organised with success the ninth edition of the Mediterranean weightlifting cup.
Eleven countries participated in this team event. Tunisia team won this competition with 1891 points, followed by France 1754 points and Italy 1607 points. Malta team placed fourth with 1482 points followed by Turkey 1321 point, Spain, Israel, Slovenia, Greece, Bosnia & Herzegovina and San Marino.
The official Malta’s team consisted of 6 athletes’ four men and two women. Kyle Micallef was the best men from the Maltese team with 306 points, Ryan Agius 292 points, Rodmar Pulis 274 points, Jovan Reljic 266points, whilst on the female side Pamela Psaila 173 points and Krista Camilleri 171 points. Besides the official team, other Maltese lifters participated in this international event to gain more experience. These lifters were Hayley Mizzi, Sarah Grixti, Dorianne Attard, Natalie Borg, Noel Coleiro, Owen Bugeja, Matthew Camillieri and Daryl Psaila, who all of them did a great job and made Malta proud with their results.
This event will surely be remembered throughout history since several Mediterranean records were broken, 11 new records were achieved in the women section whilst 7 in the male section. The best youth in this event was achieved by one of our own, Owen Bugeja, whilst Best Male was taken by Tunesia, Karem Ben Hnia, who also is the World Champion in the 77kg category; the Best Woman was also taken by Tunisian, Yosra Dhieb.
This event was a good preparation for the Maltese Team who will be competing in another international event; the Small Nations in Monaco in April, hoping for other great results.
