Asciak and Genovese in a Class of Their Own
Malta Champions Mathhew Asciak and Elaine Genovese dominated the Marsa Open Tennis Tournament sponsored by Emirates.
In the Men's Singles we had 24 entries with some foreign players taking part, making this event a bit more interesting. Matthew Asciak retained his title beating Crbcedic, Marcus Delicata, Mark Gatt in the Semi-final 6-0 6-2 and in the final Bradley Callus 6-0 6-2.
Bradley Callus disposed of Oliver Howarth in the 1st round. In the 2nd round, Callus was involved in a very tough match against Omar Sudzuoka.
Callus won the 1st set 6-3, was set point down in the tie-break second set, when sudzuoka had to retire due to a badly sprained ankle. In the semi-final Callus was too strong for Denzil Aguis and reached his first ever final.
The ladies event was held with only 6 players. Elaine Genovese once again emerged winner beating Brenda Galea in the final 6-0 6-0. In the semi-final Genovese beat Katrina Sammut 6-2 6-0. Brenda Galea beat Maria Georgina Farrugia sacco 6-2 6-0 to reach the final.
The Mens Doubles was won by Matthew Asciak /Mark Gatt, in the final they were too strong for Denzil Aguis/Bradley Callus. Asciak/Gatt won 6-2 6-2
The Emirates Marsa Open was Sanctioned by the Malta Tennis Federation. The presentation was made by Mr.Paul fleri Soler on behalf of Emirates and the Chairman of the Marsa Sports Club tennis Section, Mr. M. Cutajar
