Rosetti hangs up his whistle

The FIFA-listed official had two years left in his career before retirement, due to age limits, but opted to draw the curtain before the deadline.

Italian referee Roberto Rosetti has decided to end his career and become the new designator for Serie B.

Rosetti took part in this summer's World Cup and was heavily criticised for allowing Carlos Tevez's goal in the game between Argentina and Mexico.

Despite the fact that the blame was to be shared with the linesman, Rosetti was reportedly hurt by criticism.

"Honestly, the error in Argentina-Mexico at the World Cup in South Africa has not influenced my decision," he told the press.

"I have had a great career, 13 years in Serie A, two World Cups and three Champions League semi-finals.

"Now I have got this offer and decided to take this road. I am sure I have made the right choice." said Rosetti, in a statement.

The referee from Turin has been largely regarded as the finest in the Italian game following the retirement of Pierluigi Collina, who has just recently announced he will become a UEFA designator.
