Suarez fit but Lugano misses Uruguay's match with England
Uruguay will be without half their first choice defence for the game against England on Thursday in Sao Paulo after coach Oscar Tabarez confirms Diego Lugano will miss the game with a knee injury.
The team that finished fourth in South Africa four years ago made a disastrous start to the tournament losing 3-1 to Costa Rica and will be without full-back Alvaro Pereira against England because of his red card in the first game.
But now central defender Lugano's name is added to the list of absentees after Tabarez confirmed he will not face England.
Tabarez said: "It does not change the way we go about planning for the game. We don't know when he will be back his recuperation will be day to day."
Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates could come in to replace Lugano. The 23-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Uruguayan club Nacional as he fought his way back from surgery on a torn cruciate last summer.
Tabarez' other alternative is the smaller but quicker Atletico Madrid defender Jose Maria Gimenez. He also has the option of moving Martin Caceres into the centre of his defence but, already missing one full-back, he is expected to opt for one of his two young central defenders.
Luis Suarez is fit to start the game, potentially against as many as five of his Liverpool team-mates. But coach Tabarez warned against high expectations after his injury. He said: "If Luis plays there is a possibility that it will not be the Suarez who scored so many goals last season."
