Eurostat: Malta with the lowest employment rate in agriculture

While Malta employs only 1.1% in agriculture, employment rate in market services surpasses that of EU 27 and the euro area.

According to the latest Labour Force Survey issued by Eurostat - the statistical office of the European Union - the rate of persons employed in the Maltese agricultural sector stood at 1.1%.

With the average among the 27 member states standing at 5% and that of the euro area at 3.5%, Malta's 1.1% puts the country at the end of the list. Preceeding it are Luxembourg with 1.2% and Germany with 1.6%.

Romania marked the highest rate of employment in agriculture with 29%.

On the other hand, Malta stood well above average in employment of persons in the market services. While the average rate within the EU27 stood at 39.4% and the euro area at 40.2%, Malta's employment rate stood at 43.4%.

Falling within the average range, Malta registered 24.6% in industry and construction.

Employment in non-market services stood at 30.8%.

On average, in the EU 27, employees working full-time usually worked 40.4 hours a week in 2011 with women averaging 39.3 hours and men 41.1 hours.

In the case of Malta, employees marked 40.7%, with women averaging 39.2% and men 41.4%.
