Energy prices rise by 22.4% in June

The latest producer price index statistics published today by the NSO showed that on an annual basis, producer prices for industry increased by 3.3 % in June 2010 when compared to June 2009.

Reflecting the large increase in electricity late last year as well as the various gas increases over the past year, the NSO reported that energy prices rose by 22.4 % in June 2010 when compared to the same month a year ago.

Likewise, the NSO reported that capital and consumer goods both went up by 0.7% when compared to June 2009. Offsetting this was a fall in intermediate goods of 3.6% when compared to the same month a year ago.

The NSO reported that in June 2010, producer prices within the domestic market grew by 16.9% when compared to a year ago as a result of increases in the energy sector (+22.4 %) and the capital goods sector (+5.1 %), whereas intermediate goods dropped by 2.7 % when compared to a year ago.

Provisional data published by the NSO indicated that in the period under review, producer prices for goods destined for the non-domestic market went down by 3.0% when compared to a year ago due to a 3.8 % drop in prices of goods for the euro area.

On the other hand, for the non-euro area, prices increased by 4.4 % when compared to the corresponding month in 2009, the NSO reported.

On a monthly basis, the industrial producer price index for June 2010 increased by 2.8% when compared with the previous month.

According to the NSO, this increase in June 2010 when compared to May 2010 took place primarily as a result of an increase in producer prices of 5.0% in the intermediate goods sector.

Furthermore, the NSO reported that capital and consumer goods during June 2010 had increased by 0.1% when compared to May 2010.

On the other hand, according to the NSO, energy prices had remained stable during June 2010.

The NSO also reported that producer prices for the domestic market in June 2010 had decreased slightly by 0.1% due to a 1.0% drop in prices for intermediate goods when compared to May 2010.

During June 2010, the NSO reported how prices for the non-domestic market rose by 4.5% when compared to the previous month due to intermediate, capital and consumer goods, where prices rose by 5.4, 0.1 and 0.3% respectively.

However, producer prices in respect of goods destined for the euro area went up by 5.0% when compared with the previous month, the main contributor being intermediate goods, with an increase of 5.9 % in June 2010.

 Likewise, the NSO reported a slight increase in prices for capital goods of +0.1 % in June 2010 when compared to the previous months.

According to the NSO, no price change was registered for consumer goods in June 2010 when compared with the previous months.

On the other hand, the NSO reported that prices in respect of goods destined for the non-euro area rose by 0.3 % in June 2010 when compared with the previous month, the largest rise being in consumer goods, with an increase of +1.4 % when compared to the previous month.

Finally, NSO reported that prices for capital goods edged up by 0.1 % in June 2010 when compared to the previous month.
