Plaza Centre marks World Diabetes day
A Free Blood Glucose Monitoring initiative was held where the general public had the opportunity to get their diabetes test for free.
World Diabetes Day was celebrated around the world on the 14 November to mark the birthday of Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best, first conceived the idea which led to the discovery of insulin in 1922.
The Maltese Diabetes Association in collaboration with the Diabetes & Endocrine Centre at Mater Dei Hospital joined 200 other member associations from around the world to celebrate this important date and to raise awareness on this condition and its complications.
With the support of Plaza Centres plc who hosted the Association at their premises, a Free Blood Glucose Monitoring initiative was held where the general public had the opportunity to get their diabetes test for free.
The event was also supported by the following dignitaries who visited the event: Parliamentary Secretary for Health Chris. Fearne; Leader of the Opposition Simon Busuttil, Shadow Minister for Health Claudette Buttigieg and Government Whip and Chair of the Maltese Diabetes Parliamentary Working Group, Godfrey Farrugia.
The event attracted more than 250 members of the public. A free give away promoting a 'Healthy Breakfast' was distributed to all present.
