Regeneration of a valley: Gozo's Wied Mielah turned into trekking paradise
The ongoing embellishment project of Wied Mielah in Gharb, Gozo is entering its last phase
The €570,000 project, which will be 85% co-financed by the European Union (EU), involves the construction of countryside pathways that will make the valley more accessible to the public. Walks along the coast and in the countryside will be made easier, and tourism in Gozo is expected to be encouraged with the promotion of trekking activities in Wied Mielah.
Parliamentary secretary Chris Said and Gharb mayor David Apap visited the site to see the progress on the project. “The charm of this location combined with this project is bound to improve Gozo’s touristic appeal at large and it will also increase Gharb’s competitive advantage as a rural touristic location," Said said.
Wied Mielah has now been experiencing a number of changes, namely a cleaner surrounding environment in the valley; the construction of rubble walls and extraction of water for plant watering; the planting of more trees and the installation of rural furniture to craft a recreational area for families. Better signage in valley, together with brochures, booklets and a website promoting the valley and other places of interest in Gharb, are set to be part of the project, intended to guide and inform visiting tourists.
