Holidaying in Corfu
If holidays for you mean sun and sea then perhaps the Greek island of Corfu could be your ideal destination this summer.
Boasting a beautiful coastline which spans over 217km, the island can sound like a great escape.
Corfu (or Kerkyra in Greek) offers everything for everyone – couples will enjoy romantic hideaways at small secluded beaches, families with small children will definitely have fun visiting the Aqualand Park and those who have a hunger for culture will never get bored visiting numerous castles, ancient ruins and other attractions.
Saint Spyridon is the main patron of the island and it is believed by the faithful that he saved the island from the plague. You will see a lot of pilgrims visiting St. Spyridon’s church in the old town of Corfu, praying at his relics.
The old town is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. You will fall in love with its narrow streets and little taverns in every corner with their smiling owners inviting you to taste their specialities. And you will not leave disappointed –the Corfu’s cuisine is dominated by local products as meat, fish, olive oil, vegetables and cheese that will surprise you day by day with their quality.
If you like exotic flavours, try Dolmadakia (wine leaves filled with rice and minced meat), Numbulo (a special ham which you can find only in Kerkyra). Greek people love meat and here you can find an amazing variety of meat dishes to satisfy even the most demanding Epicurean. Great choice of fish and seafood is also offered everywhere.
Some of the best beaches of the Ionian Islands, awarded with European Union’s Blue Flag, can be found in Corfu. They are mostly located on the west side of the island. Agios Stefanos is a long sandy beach located in a scenic fishing village. The cosmopolitan Glyfada beach is situated 15 km from Corfu Town, with turquoise waters, golden sand and beach bars. Agios Georgios is a sandy beach with clubs. Kavos beach located southeast of Corfu Town is extremely popular amongst the younger crowds who stay in the open bars until late.
Kanoni is the most visited and photographed location on the island and it is one of the places that every visitor should see due to the beautiful view of the church of Panagia Vlahernon and the famous Mouse Island.
The best way to see the island is by either taking one of our well-organised excursions or by hiring a car (we offer car rental services as well). For your stay we chose hotels, conveniently located close to Corfu town and beaches – affordable 4*Ariti Grand hotel (where the Maltese Rep shall reside) and 5* Corfu Holiday Palace for those who enjoy that extra luxury, both situated in Kanoni area.
The 2* Anita family run hotel for budget travelers and of course Self-catering Nancy’s Rooms if you are one of those who like to fulfill their days from dusk till dawn and only need a bed to sleep.
