Air Malta considering reopening of Frankfurt route

Air Malta is currently reconsidering the possibility of reopening its Frankfurt route, tourism minister Konrad Mizzi has confirmed.

Mizzi was responding to a supplementary parliamentary question put to him by shadow tourism minister Robert Arrigo, this morning.

According to the minister, Air Malta’s marketing team was currently evaluating the possibility of opening a number of new routes, as well as others which might have been closed in the past.

He stressed however, that if Air Malta were to reopen its Frankfurt route, this would have to come with a holistic plan and long-term.

“It would have to be done well and would not result in Air Malta returning for one season,” said the minister.

Isle of MTV ‘a success’

The question originally put to the minister was regarding the Isle of MTV festival, which he said had been a success.

The minister confirmed that the attendance for the event was of over 50,000 people, making it the largest free event in Europe.

Mizzi thanked members of St John’s ambulance, the civil protection department, hospital workers, as well as all those involved in maintaining security at the concert.

“Every person entering the event were security cleared,” noted Mizzi, adding that the number of cameras in the event’s security control room had also been increased, in addition to there having been 170 policemen and 300 security personnel on duty.

Minister Mizzi also pointed out that the concert had contributed to Malta repositioning its tourism product, which was important in light of the fact that an increasing number of tourists visiting Malta were youths.
