UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to face no-confidence vote
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will face a no-confidence vote on Monday evening amid building pressure over findings in the 'partygate' investigation
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will face a no-confidence vote on Monday evening amid building pressure over findings in the “partygate” investigation.
If Johnson loses the vote among the 359 Conservative MPs, the party will choose a new leader to become prime minister. However, according to current party rules, if Johnson wins, he can't face another challenge for a year.
The triggering of a no-confidence vote shows deep signs of Converstative divisions even if Johnson survives the vote, just three years after the party's most significant election victory in decades.
Conservative Party official Graham Brady announced Monday that he had received letters calling for a no-confidence vote from at least 54 Tory legislators, enough to trigger the measure under party rules.
The vote is expected to take place between 6pm and 8pm BST (7pm to 9pm GMT+1).
What is partygate?
Partygate comprises of a series of allegations that several parties took place across 10 Downing Street and other government buildings over the course of the Covid-19 pandemic, which may have been in violation of legal restrictions on gatherings in place at the time.
The media has so far reported on 16 parties which may have taken place.
