Arriving at the third meeting of the Eurogroup this week, Finance Minister Edward Scicluna appeared exasperated as the final proposals were handed over by the Greeks only 30 minutes before the start of the meeting.

"We're running out of patience and out of comments," the Maltese minister said bluntly.

"We've received a document from [finance minister] Varoufakis just half an hour ago. We tried to merge them together but we want to know what was deleted or what has been added."

Scicluna was referring to the proposals submitted by the European Central Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the European Commission and the Greeks' counter proposals.

"In other words, we want to know what the disagreements are."

Asked whether Greece and its creditors were edging closer to an agreement, the minister conceded that the two sides were reading from the same book.

Before stepping inside the building, Scicluna and the other ministers had question marks over what the disagreements are.

"I don't know what the disagreements are," he reiterated.

Sounding almost resigned, Scicluna said: "We ran out of time trying to do forecasts."

In doorstep comments before the start of the EU Summit, Council President Donald Tusk said: “Work is underway and for sure it will still need many more hours. The last hours have been critical but I have a good hunch that this Greek story will have a happy ending.”
