'Internet can reduce social, economic disparities' - Internet Governance Forum
MEP Therese Comodini Cachia represents EP Legal Affairs Committee at Internet Governance Forum
"The Internet is a common good and ensuring its good governance will help bring its benefits to all people in the world". This was stated in a joint declaration signed by European Commission Vice President Andrus Ansip (responsible for Digital Single Market) and MEP Therese Comodini Cachia along with other Members of the European Parliament present at the Internet Governance Forum (IGF).
During the Forum the EU delegation advocated for improved Internet access all over the world; an open and independent Internet as a global common resource together with non-discriminatory access to knowledge.
The delegation also advocated for solutions related to cybersecurity and cybercrime ranging from solutions to improve the security of critical infrastructures to giving individuals and small businesses appropriate tools for secure communication. The EU delegation stressed that further discussions were still needed on issues related to cybersecurity and cybercrime.
Commenting at the end of the mission, Comodini Cachia, who was representing the European Parliament Committee on Legal Affairs, stated that the internet as a common good can help societies bridge gaps in education, social and economic disparities but in doing so the internet in best governed by a multi-stakeholder approach. It is not for any one stakeholder to govern the internet.
Companies, technical experts, NGOs, civil society, governments and the international community each have a role to play but the key factor in good governance of the internet is that they must exercise their role jointly.
Comodini Cachia, member of the EPP Group, called for more leadership in cybersecurity as well as in finding technical ways to protect vulnerable users from online crime and bullying.
The EU delegation recognised that fundamental freedoms and human rights must be protected both online and offline and also stressed the economic and social importance of online rights for privacy, of users’ control of their personal data as well as the freedom of expression and association.
IGF brings together various stakeholders to discuss current and emerging internet governance issues, as well as related opportunities and challenges. The 10th annual meeting of IGF, convened by the UN Secretary General, revolved around the theme, "Evolution of Internet Governance: Empowering Sustainable Development" and was held in João Pessoa, Brazil, from the 10 to 13 November to discuss the crucial role the internet must play in the successful implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
In his opening statement UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stated, “Less than two months ago, world leaders adopted the visionary 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Our challenge now is to implement this blueprint for a better future. Information and communication technologies and the Internet can empower this global undertaking”.
This year's IGF focused on a range of sub-themes, including Cybersecurity and Trust; Internet Economy; Inclusiveness and Diversity; Openness; Enhancing Multi-stakeholder Cooperation; Internet and Human Rights; Critical Internet Resources and Emerging Issues.
