Green light for new police academy in Ta’ Kandja
The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) board earlier today granted a full development permit for the construction of a new Police Academy at Ta' Kandja, limits of Siggiewi.
The development, although within an ODZ area, mainly includes the demolition and replacement of existing dilapidated buildings, which will include a multifunctional auditorium, a two storey block for dormitories with 29 rooms, an administration block for offices, classrooms and a library, an access road and 32 car parking spaces. Only a small parcel of new land, which today is already committed and utilized by the Malta Police Force, will be developed.
The MEPA Board also approved the redevelopment of the former Roxy Cinema, together with a number of adjacent buildings in Birkirkara. The approved development, which is located within a busy commercial area, forming part of the town centre and in close proximity of the existing Birkirkara bus terminus, will include the construction a shopping mall, offices, community and child care facilities, apartments and underlying garages. The Art Noveau façade of the Cinema will be retained. Part of the development also faces onto Il-Gnien tal-Istazzjon tal-Ferrovija L-Qadima.
