Parliament should approve Greek bailout – AD
Alternattiva Demokratika urges Parliament to approve the Greek bailout in Parliament next Wednesday and expressed its support of the financial transactions tax proposed by the European Commission.
AD’s chairperson Michael Briguglio urged government to approve the Greek bailout, and added that solidarity is a “key value” of the European Union.
“The Greek bailout will not only help prevent meltdown of the Greek economy, but will also help bring out stability both in Greece and in the Eurozone as a whole.”
Briguglio added that it is in Malta’s interest to have a stable Eurozone, as this will help bring about economic and social stability: “The alternative to this is increased poverty, unemployment and instability.”
Referring to the proposed financial transactions tax by the European Commission, Briguglio said this would help generate revenue which could be used to strengthen the European economy.
“It is estimated that such a tax could generate up to €55 billion a year. It is high time that banks and financial institutions participate in responsibility sharing for the economic crisis, especially since they received massive help from public funds when this was needed,” Briguglio said.
“If workers and employers are paying tax to help sustain economic and social stability, then it is only fair that banks and financial institutions do the same.”
