Labour councillor resigns after alleged assault – report
Nadur Labour councillor Jonathan Buttigieg is charged with having assaulted a police inspector.
The Sunday Times reports that Jonathan Buttigieg, a Labour councillor from Nadur, was charged with assaulting a police inspector last Tuesday. Buttigieg has resigned from the Labour Party but has retained his seat on the council.
The incident took place last Tuesday when Buttigieg was reportedly driving the wrong way in a one-way road. The police inspector - who was driving his personal car and was not wearing the uniform - directed Buttigieg to turn back, at which point the councillor allegedly assaulted him.
Buttigieg has pleaded not guilty to assault, breaching the peace and swearing in public.
