Young policeman dies as car plunges into sea

Update 2 | A young Gozitan policeman met a tragic death early this morning when his car crashed and fell into the sea near the Gozo ferry quay in Cirkewwa.

21 year-old PC730 Kurt Gauci who died this morning

21 year-old police constable Kurt Gauci from Marsalforn, Gozo, drowned inside the vehicle before a number of shocked ferry commuters.

Gauci was reportedly returning to Gozo after night duty at the Birkirkara Police Station, and rather than driving onto the ramp he took a turning and drove straight off and into the sea beneath the Gozo ferry.

According to witnesses, the youth was asleep in the car as he waited to board the ferry, and it is not excluded that he fell asleep on the wheel while driving up the ramp.

His car, a Hyundai Accent, was pulled out of the sea by a nearby crane.

Meanwhile, news about Kurt Gauci's death reached Gozo, and tributes from friends, colleagues and family have been pouring in on his Facebook page.

While police investigations are still ongoing, a Magisterial inquiry is underway.

A tribute to PC Gauci was also made in Parliament by Nationalist MP Beppe Fenech Adami.
