The ice-cold water at Sliema did not stop some 154 Maltese from taking part in the charity swim in aid of l-Istrina.

The swim, which has become a Boxing Day tradition, has to date collected some €58,000 since the Thomas Smith Charity Swim began. Today's swim raised some €13,000.

President George Abela attended the event and handed out medals to the participants, who included Nationalist MPs Beppe Fenech Adami and Karl Gouder, TV presenter Pierre Portelli and head of European Commission Representation in Malta Martin Bugelli.

The age of the participants varied from 10 to 75 years, as relatives waited for the brave swimmers on shore with towels.
