Search for ‘suspicious passengers' delays Air Malta flight

Outbound Air Malta flight KM 146 to Manchester delayed by an hour and 15 minutes as Police carry out checks on plane.

Passengers flying to Manchester on Air Malta flight KM 146 were delayed by an hour and a half, after Police had to carry out searches on the plane.

MaltaToday is informed that the passengers were asked to disembark and were rechecked. Passengers on board told MaltaToday that all luggage was passed through scanners again, while the chief of the Airport Security explained there was a problem related to immigration check.

Another passenger said that around 12 Airport police were on site.

Contacted by MaltaToday, Air Malta's spokesman Stephen Gauci confirmed that flight KM 146, scheduled to leave at 3:30pm, left the island at 4:45pm.

"Police had to carry out checks as they were suspicious over particular passengers," Gauci said.

He however was not able to say what the Police had been suspicious about.

Wow. This must have been something really important, like the crown jewels or a kilo of heroin - right? Cannot possibly have been something as trivial as a missing mobile phone.

And was the phone found on any passenger? Or was it the intention to harm AirMalta by this action? Does this phone cost more than what AirMalta has to pay for a relocation of it's slot? I do not know why the police acted in this manner. If a murder had sufficed I would have justified the police's action but not for a phone. They should have written down a report and asked the passenger to claim it from his/her insurance. After all, their action, cost me and every citizen part of our taxes.
