Growth with equity, fiscal sustainability and the welfare state are the fundamental objectives for the next government according to a document published by the Today Public Policy Institute.

The document, entitled "A strategy for addressing the nation's priorities" highlights both the constraints and the national priority areas of good governance which need to be addressed if the next administration is to successfully navigate Malta through the economic, social, environmental and security shoals that lie ahead over the next few years.

The Today Public Policy Institute report aims to stimulate a public debate on the major issues which Malta's political parties "may wish to consider in the preparation of their election manifestos."

Public finance, employment, women in the work-place, social security, education and health are among the main goals for the next administration listed in the report.

The report also highlights a number of areas which need to be improved in order to achieve good governance. These include electoral system reform, party financing, broadcasting, transport, energy, freedom of speech, public appointments and migration.

The independent think-tank underlines the impact of current global and European economic circumstances on the next government.

"Malta's obligations under the new EU Fiscal Compact, the priority of achieving a balanced budget, the prospect of slower growth, the burden of an ageing population and other inescapable factors mean that the amount of financial resources that will be available to the next administration to spend on new initiatives will depend heavily on the extent to which current expenditure commitments can be reduced."

The think-tank also underlines the importance of introducing reforms designed to achieve a more efficient as well as effective use of human and financial resources, thus laying the foundations for future growth.

The report stresses that the "challenges facing Malta over the life-time of the next Parliament and beyond will be formidable."

It also explains that the expected contractionary impact on trade and economic growth of the ongoing eurozone crisis, combined with the fiscal discipline imposed by the new EU Fiscal Compact, will inevitably limit the room for manoeuvre and "will therefore call for the most judicious management of the available human and financial resources."

Eurozone crisis is not going to go away and the Eurozone is going to collapse to be followed by the EU collapse, so better get out now before the whole thing collapses and buries us under its rubble.
