Independent MP Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando this evening tabled in parliament a petition signed by over 2,000 people residing in Rabat, Dingli and Imtarfa.

Presenting the petition to the House, Pullicino Orlando said the car parks concerned were situated next to the swings in Rabat and Anton Agius Sqaure, the area formerly known as 'l-ghalqa ta' Kola'.

The petition calls for parliament to issue a resolution that stops the full privatisation process of the two areas. The signatories to the petition also gave their consensus to any necessary legal action that could be taken in order to avoid the privatisation.

"This petition also enjoys the support of councillors coming from both sides of the political arena," Pullicino Orlando said.

The MP added that he wasn't excluding presenting a second petition in the near future.

The mayors of Rabat and Dingli together with representatives from the Imtarfa local council were present for the tabling of the petition.

Last week, the government suspended the privitisation process of public car parks following a motion tabled by the Opposition asking for a repeal of the process.

Despite the suspension of the privitisation process, the Opposition together with Pullicino Orlando and Nationalist MP Franco Debono insisted that the motion is discussed urgently this week.

Meanwhile, Speaker Michael Frendo also took note of the letter sent to him by Nationalist MP Jesmond Mugliett over his decision to resign from the National Audit Committee.
