Prime Minister Joseph Muscat this afternoon said that political parties must pay their water and electricity bills, just like everyone else.

On Sunday, this newspaper revealed that a total of €2.5 million in energy and water bills had still not been paid by the two main political parties – €1.9 million by the Nationalist Party and €600,000 from the Labour Party.

Asked by the press today what actions he would be taking in light of this revelation, Muscat said that political parties were no exception to the rule and had to pay their dues.

“We will proceed in the same manner as everyone else,” he said. “No one is exempt from paying electricity and water tariffs and that includes the political parties.”

The information revealed on Sunday confirmed years of speculation that both parties have enjoyed secret amnesties on their water and electricity bills.
