Strong sea currents at the Blue lagoon in Comino yesterday left eighty swimmers struggling to reach the shore whilst swimming, the Emergency Response and Rescue Corps (ERRC) said.

Lifeguards of the ERRC assisted them all ashore and none of them required further medical intervention.

Earlier, lifeguards also assisted a twenty-year-old Belgian woman with a suspected spinal injury after jumping from a height off Comino. She was taken to the Mgarr Harbour by means of hydro ambulance Lifesaver 1 where an ambulance was waiting for her to transport her to the Gozo General Hospital for further treatment.

The lifeguarding service at the Blue Lagoon in Comino is possible due to financial support from the Malta Tourist Authority.  Support is also being provided by the Ministry for Gozo, Mgarr Marina, Transport Malta, Police, Armed Forces of Malta, Police and the Civil Protection Department.
