An agreement has been reached between the Department of Health and the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses (MUMN) on a number of issues concerning the Infectious Disease Unit (IDU) at Mater Dei Hospital.

During the past four weeks, both parties tackled all pending issues raised by the nurses, namely the nursing compliment, the screening programme for the unit's staff, and the admissions policy.

The agreement will guarantee the nurses’ safety and improve patient care at the IDU. This agreement concurs with the government's commitment towards a better working environment for nurses and an improved health service.

All MUMN directives regarding the Infectious Disease Unit (IDU) have been withdrawn with immediate effect.

Both MUMN President Paul Pace and Parliamentary Secretary for Health Chris Fearne expressed their satisfaction regarding the way the issue was engaged to ensure the best interests of staff and patients alike.
