State broadcaster installs fixed IP data link in Gozo

PBS sets up its own studio facility in Victoria

A fixed IP data link has been installed by Public Broadcasting Services to connect Gozo to its Creativity Hub in Guardamangia.

The project's objective is to facilitate direct transmissions or recordings from Gozo without the need for Gozitan personalities to have to travel to Malta each time they are interviewed in different TVM programmes.

The project was supported by the Ministry for Gozo and a related agreement was signed between the ministry’s permanent secretary John Borg and PBS CEO Anton Attard.

Discussions were initiated by Gozo Minister Anton Refalo and PBS chairman Tonio Portughese.

This fully dedicated internet connection has been set up in a studio facility in Victoria acting as a PBS studio in Gozo, characterized by the official PBS branding.

The system employs the latest state-of-the-art technology known as DMNG (Digital Mobile News Gathering) where broadcast quality video is encoded into a data stream and sent over high speed internet.

The system has also seven simultaneous channels of 3G connections. This feature gives the facility as a mobile wireless link for emergency news events from the sister island.

This fixed link project forms part of the PBS special focus on Gozo's social, economic, cultural, musical, and religious activities capturing its distinct characteristics.
