The Church is organising a mass to commemorate the 40th anniversary since Joseph Mercieca was appointed Auxiliary Bishop. Archbishop Paul Cremona will be celebrating mass and Apostolic Nuncio Aldo Cavalli, Gozo Bishop Mario Grech, Auxilary Bishop Charles Scicluna, and Bishop Joe Alessandro will all be present. Mercieca himself will assist throughout the Mass.

The mass will be held at the Mdina Cathedral on 29 September at 18:30 and all Christians are invited.

Mercieca became Malta’s Auxilary Bishop on 27 July 1974 and he was consecrated as a bishop on 29 September of the same year. He had previously spent five years in the Vatican as a Judge. He became Malta’s Archbishop on 12 December 1976 and remained in that position up until 2006. He was nominated as a consulter of the Roman Rota in 1992, and later on as a judge in the Apostolic Signatory.

Mercieca is now 85 years old and lives in the Archbishop’s residence in Mdina.

The mass will be broadcast live on TVM2, RTK and Radju Marija.
