Europe-wide petition against TTIP collects 800,000 signatures
European citizen’s self-organised initiative against Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership garners over 800,000 signatures
The European Citizen's self-organised initiative against TTIP, comprising 230 organisations in 21 European countries has so far collected more than 800,000 signatures.
The controversial Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership wants to reduce regulatory barriers to trade for big business. Critics feared that the deal would spell disaster in areas such as food safety law, environmental legislation, banking regulations and the sovereign powers of individual states.
“The TTIP being negotiated between the EU and the US risks lowering standards such as workers' rights, environmental protection and food safety. Secrecy on what is being discussed is not helping matters,” the Social Europe - Front Against TTIP Malta said.

It said that TTIP controversially includes a so-called investor-state dispute settlement mechanism that would enable multi-national companies to sue nation states in a special court - the Investor-State Settlement Dispute (ISDS).
“This would give much less power to democratically-elected governments,” it said.
Social Europe - Front Against TTIP (Malta) urged the Maltese Government to review its position on the matter, thus acting in the interests of citizens, workers and consumers.
