Real estate development at White Rocks not ruled out
New expression of interest set to be issued in 2014
An expression of interest for the development of the derelict White Rocks site in Bahar ic-Caghaq will be issued by the government in early 2014, Sunday newspaper ILLUM reports.
The government is not excluding the development of real estate and residential units on the site of the area where the White Rocks Sports and Leisure Village was supposed to be constructed.
Earmarked for a family park, a BMX track, tennis and football pitches and water facilities amongst many other developments, the former administration's project never materialised and the site now lays in its perennial run-down and dilapidated state.
The former government had however excluded the development of residential units, much to the contempt of various interested parties, among whom included Nationalist-leaning entrepreneurs who believed real estate should be the main source of income for such a project.
As opposed to his previous counterpart, Joseph Muscat and his government will not exclude the development of residential units.
The White Rocks Project was expected to include €200 million in investment and generate hundreds of jobs but the project fell through. Over €500,000 was spent in government consultancies researching the finance and design of the project.
