Agreement reached on Stella Maris teacher recruitment
Malta Union of Teachers reach agreement with Provincial of De La Salle Brothers over 'dubious' recruitment of teachers at Stella Maris
The Malta Union of Teachers has struck a deal with the Provincial of the De La Salle Brothers over the recruitment of teachers at Stella Maris College.
In a statement, the MUT said that Brother Provincial Martin Borg had informed it of the church school’s plans to affect changes and that the union supports the school’s new initiatives.
At a press conference on Monday, MUT Kevin Bonello hit out at Stella Maris for recruiting teachers in a “dubious and irregular” manner.
He said that the school “has reached a national record” by sacking an average of three probationary teachers every year, sometimes replacing them by unqualified teachers.
“I have no idea why this practice occurs but it is unbefitting of any employer, let alone the church, and unfair on these young teachers who are just starting out in the world,” Bonello said.
The union’s concerns will be discussed and investigated in a further meeting to be held next week.
