Prime Minister meets with Theresa May at Westminster Abbey
Joseph Muscat said that Malta will act as an honest broker during Brexit talks between the UK and the European Union
As holder of the rotating Presidency of the council of Europe, Malta will look to act as an honest broker in Brexit discussions between the European Union and the United Kingdom, according to Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.
In a statement issued following a meeting with UK prime minister Theresa May at Westminster Abbey, Muscat said that Malta will look to move any discussions in a direction that would be “in everyone’s interests.”
He added that while the EU does not intend to create obstacles, it is obvious that the relationship the EU has wit the UK must be similar to the relationship it has with third countries.
According to the Independent a spokesman for the UK government confirmed that while Article 50 will not be triggered this week, it will have been by the end of the month.
Moreover, Muscat said that despite the UK’s exit, Malta will have “the best relations possible,” with the country, as it has had over the years.
The Prime Minister is currently on a visit to the UK in his capacity of the Chair in Office of the Commonwealth, since Malta currently holds the Chairmanship of international association.
Later on Monday he will be addressing a traditional function also held at Westminster Abbey, in the presence of the Royal Family, on the day dedicated to the Commonwealth.
