Pig farm to leave Comino
The operation of pig breeding on the Island of Comino, will soon be terminated following the MEPA Board decision, earlier today, to grant a development permit for the expansion of the existing pig farm at the Ghammieri grounds, limits of Luqa.
The expansion project will include the construction of an Artificial Insemination centre, a laboratory, storage facilities, offices and a livestock farm for pigs mainly utilized as a quarantine for imported breeding stock, prior to the distribution of this stock to other farms.
Through this development permit, the Authority has requested the applicant, The Pig Breeder’s Cooperative (KIM), to vacate the Comino farm, clear and decommission this facility including the sewage system.
The Comino farm had become operational in 1979 following a swine fever epidemic which wiped out most of Malta’s pig population.
As a Natura 2000 site, Comino forms part of a network of European nature reserves that merit special protection on a European level due to their ecological importance. Comino is also designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
