Subsidised flights for Maltese living abroad for divorce referendum
The Office of the Prime Minister has confirmed with sister newspaper Illum that government will be providing subsidised flights for voters abroad to come to Malta and vote in the 28 May divorce referendum.
A spokesperson for the OPM said details on the flights would be announced in the coming days. A substantial part of Maltese living and working abroad are in the UK and Brussels.
The government and Electoral Commission has not furnished the newspaper with any details on the cost of the distribution of votes, which this year was contracted to Maltapost.
The decision itself was marred by Maltapost’s silence on an incident in which 15 voting documents fell from a post officer’s bag during distribution, raising questions on why police officers were not accompanying the postal workers.
