Maltese cuisine competition in Melborne

The Australian Maltese Enterprise Exchange is to hold a competiton “Tan-Nanna Helu Manna” (Nanna’s Sweet Cooking) at the William Angliss Institute in Melborne, Australia on 18 September.

Competitors attending span from Altona, Werribe, Keilor, Brighton, Sandringham and even Perth and promise to provide an array of Maltese dishes including but not limited to stuffat tal-qarnit (octopus stew), stuffat tal-fenek (rabbit stew), qarabaghli mimli (stuffed marrows) and patata fil-forn (baked potatoes).

The aim of the competition is to draw traditional Maltese dishes out into the public in Melborne as despite a large Maltese population, Maltese cuisine enjoys very little popularity.

Organiser Sandra Mooney said the reason Maltese food is not widely known outside the Maltese community as many Maltese migrants tried hard to assimilate into Maltese culture. The group are hoping that the competition will not only put the spotlight on Maltese cuisine but also teach the next generation of Maltese-Australians the family’s secret recipes.
