Karen Mugliett's fruit of the week

For this week, healthy eating specialist and home economist Karen Mugliett suggests oranges as the fruit of the week.

An orange is a citrus fruit and therefore an acid fruit which are detoxifying fruits. Local oranges are unique and delicious.

Fresh oranges are rich in Vitamin C and are particularly abundant at this time of the year. It almost seems as if nature herself wants to help out with the common cold season by providing the most Vitamin C-rich fruit during this time of year."

The Vitamin C in oranges is at its best when freshly picked. The longer it takes to be consumed after picked, the more of the vitamin is lost. Oranges can be used in savoury and sweet dishes.

"My favourite recipe with oranges is salmon steaks in oranges and with orange rind," Mugliett says.
