Four Maltese boxers to participate in Battle of Britain
Malta to be represented at the ‘Battle of Britain’ promotion at York Hall, London this Friday
The Malta Boxing Association 2014 Team which consists of four boxers have been selected to represent Malta at the Independent Boxing Association 2014 Championships that will take place at ‘York Hall’ Bethnal Green, London England.
York Hall is one of Britain’s most well know boxing venue with a capacity of 1,300 which underwent a major multi-million pound refurbishment in a joint project between the local Council and Greenwich Leisure in 2005.
This is the first time a Maltese team has been invited to travel and challenge for titles. The team is made up of Team Manager Demis Tonna , National Coach Steve Martin and boxers Noel Lebrun, Duncan Calleja and Richard Vella who will to try to snatch the IBA titles from their British counterparts and Nico Sciberras who will box his first International non-title bout against British Professional fighter Collin Lines’ brother.
The Independent Boxing Association is headed by Allen Mortlock and represented on the Malta Boxing Association Executive Committee by Demis Tonna of Prize Boxing Promotions.
The Independent Boxing Association is a semi-professional boxing league with over 2,000 members. The organisation sanctions National, International, and own ranking championship titles.
The British based semi pro sanctioning body is one of the leading international bodies with regards to professionalism in boxer’s safety and well-being with strong communication skills, sharing the same values to athletes as the Malta Boxing Association.
The training camp proved to be a great success and an excellent learning experience for our local fighters as they continue to improve and enhance the technical level of the sports on the Island, under the experienced guidance of Steve Martin (WBF World, International & Intercontinental Welterweight Champion), Christian Schembri (Sparring Partner), Malta Boxing Association Senior Vice-President Demis Tonna while the entire event was made possible by the help of Allen Mortlock as well as the Independent Boxing Association.
