Hamrun take all three points against Qormi

Hamrun Spartans today moved up to third place in the BOV Premier League standings after they defeated Qormi 2-1.

Qormi had some good opportunities to take the lead in the first 15 minutes of the match. Three minutes into the match, Matthew Bartolo had his shot from inside the area blocked by goalkeeper Omar Borg. Another attempt by Bartolo 14 minutes into the match was also without success.

Hamrun then found the opening goal 28 minutes into the match. Marcelo Pereira back passed to Gaetan Spiteri who beat Qormi goalkeeper Matthew Farrugia to give Hamrun the lead.

Qormi replied immediately to try to get the equaliser, but Abubakar Bello-Osagie’s powerful shot was saved by Omar Borg.

Qormi got themselves into some trouble 31 minutes into the match. A challenge by Jonathan Bondin on Gaetan Spiteri inside the was judged as a penalty and the sending off of Bondin. Ryan Fenech converted the penalty and gave Hamrun a two goal advantage.

It was going to be a uphill battle for Qormi from then on.

Qormi managed to break the Hamrun defence when four minutes into added time of the first half. A costly mistake by defender Jovan Vukanic gave Joseph Chetcuti the chance to have his close range shot beat goalkeeper Omar Borg.

Hamrun protected their one goal lead in the second half to take all three points home.
