Champions Inter thrashed by Werder Bremen to finish second in Group A

A review of Tuesday night's UEFA Champions League matches.

Tottenham qualified as Group A winners as they played to and exciting 3-3 draw against FC Twente.

Tottenham opened the scoreon the 12th  minute when an own goal by Peter Wisqerhof gave the Hotspurs the lead. It was not long after when FC Twente leveled matters after Denny Roberto converted a penalty.

Jermain Defoe gave Tottenham the lead again on the 47th  minute., but Twente responded again in the second half on the 55th  minute. The match was level again.

Defoe got his second of the night on the 59th  minute to make it 3-2. A fantastic free-kick from Nacer Chadli denied Tottenham the win to make it 3-3. With this result, Tottenham still finished at the top of Group A as Inter slumped to a 3-0 loss against Werder Bremen.

You can say Inter played with young inexperienced players, they had the World Club Cup on their mind or finally they had too many injuries. But a defeat like that is not expected from defending Champions. Werder Bremen made Inter look like an amateur side last night by defeating them 3-0.

Goals flowed in from Sebastian Prodl on the 38th  minute, former Inter striker Marko Arnautovic on the 49th  minute and finally from substitute Claudio Pizarro.

Inter now qualify in second place, and surely will have a tough opponent in the next round.

Benitez is resting his best players for the World Club Cup, but a defeat like this surely will not go down well with Inter President Massimo Moratti.

In other matches Schalke secured top spot in Group B after defeating Benfica 2-1. Goals from Jose Jurado on the 19th  minute and Benedikt Howedes on the 81st  minute sealed the matter. Benfica scored a consolation goal on the 87th  minute thanks to Luisao.

Lyon secured their place in the next round as they played to a 2-2 draw against Hapoel and denied them a place in the Europa League.

At one point Lyon were behind, but a late fight back destroyed Hapoel’s dreams of continuing to play in Europe. Lyon opened up the score on the 62nd  minute thanks to Lisandro Lopez. Hapoel’s Ben Sahar equalised one minute later. Eran Zehavi  gave Hapoel the shock lead on the 60th  minute but Lyon fought back and Alexandre Lacazette scored the all important goal for the draw on the 88th  minute.

Bursaspor and Rangers practically had nothing to play for as the Rangers already booked their spot in the Europa league and Bursaspor remained in last place in Group C.

Kenny Miller opened up the score on the 19th  minute putting his goal count in all competitions to 19. Bursaspor’s Sercan Yildirim scored the equaliser on the 79th minute as his team pressed for the win. The match ended 1-1.

Manchester United finished at the top of Group C after playing after fighting back to earn a draw against Valencia. United could have had the record of going through the Group stages without conceding a goal but Valencia denied them that record.

Pablo gave Valencia the lead on the 32nd  minute to shock the English crowd and put all the pressure on United as they could have finished second in the Group. United had to wait for the equaliser until the 62nd  minute when Anderson unleashed a powerful strike to ensure United finished Group C winners.

Barcelona continued to show that they are the team to beat in the Champions league as they played a match without most of their first team players to defeat Ruben Kazan 2-0.

Barcelona finished first in Group D with this result. Goals from Fontas on the 51st  minute and Victor Vazquez on the 82nd  was enough for Barcelona.

FC Copenhagen progressed into the next round of the Champions League after a comfortable 3-1 victory over Panathinaikos. With Barcelona defeating Rubin Kazan, FC Copenhagen would have went through regardless of the outcome.

Martin Vinqarrd opened up the sscore on the 26th  minute for Copenhagen. Jesper Gronkjaer made it 2-0 after converting a penalty. An own goal made matters worse for Panathinaikos when Djibril Cisse was the victim on the 73rd  minute to make it 3-0. Panathinaikos scored a consolation goal thanks to Cedric Kante on the 90th  minute.
