Inter defeat Napoli to progress

The match could have went both ways with some fantastic opportunities in front of goal. Napoli had the edge through the entire match with more chances and should have sealed the victory. Napoli’s Edinson Cavani had a goal disallowed on the 12th minute for being offside. On the 36th minute Dejan Stankovic’s attempt was saved by Napoli goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis. On the 40th minute, Maicon setup Esteban Cambiasso who’s powerful shot hit the crossbar and bounced back onto the pitch. Cambiasso failed to take advantage of the rebound. On the 84th minute mark, Marek Hamsik struck from the heart of the area but Castellazzi did well to clear. This was the best opportunity for Napoli to kill off the match. In extra-time Napoli pressed for the winning goal and put Inter under difficulty, but the winning goal did not arrive and both sides had to decide the match in a penalty-shootout. Inter went on to edge out Napoli as Lavezzi’s shot over the goal was enough for Inter to advance to the semi-finals against either Roma or Juventus. Dejan Stankovic’s injury was the big worry of the evening for Inter coach Leonardo as he had to be helped off the pitch.
