Valletta made an excellent start to the match as they forged ahead after just 3 minutes. Joseph Zerafa’s cross was handled inside the penalty area by Roderick Briffa and the referee pointed towards the spot. Steve Borg took charge of the spot kick and converted.

Gzira were also awarded a penalty on the 52nd minute. Jonathan Caruana was judged to have fouled Haruna Garba inside the penalty area and the referee signalled for another penalty. However, Andrew Cohen saw his shot from the eleven metres mark being saved by Henry Bonello.

The Maroons managed to equalise four minutes later. Justin Mengolo was played through by Edison Bilbao Zarate and the Cameroonian forward went round Henry Bonello before placing the ball inside the net.
