Malta Weightlifting Association organises first local competition of 2012
On the 5th of February The Malta Weightlifting Association organised its first local competition for this year. It was encouraging to see a nice number of athletes started the year showing good progress.
In the Women's Category Nicole Gatt managed to break nine national records, four in the 53kg youths, four in the Juniors and one in the Seniors Category. Gatt managed to lift a total of 87Kg earning her the first place. She was followed by Marilyn Grech and Destiny Vella Busutill. A good effort from athlete Francesca Mercieca earned her the first place in the Cadets Category.
In the Men's Category Youths Hayden Farrugia came first with a total of 124Kg followed by Miguel Grixti and Joran Farrugia, the latter managed to break a national record in the 94Kg Youths. Malcom Camilleri improved on his last performance and gained 75 points he was followed by Emerson Bugeja who was taking part in his first competition.
In the Men's category RodmarPulis gained first place with 253 points followed by Matthew Muscat Inglott with 244 points. Good progress was also shown by Chris Schinas getting 177 points followed by James Formosa with 172 points and Mark Briffa with 160points.
The technical officers for this competition were Alfred Ellul Mercer, Simon Brincat, Stephen Borg and Andrea Caruana. The Competition was run by Jesmond Caruana.
Mr. Caruana has just returned from Dammam in Saudi Arabia where he served as technical officer as a member of the Jury in the ISSF Weightlifting Championships. He was chosen for this role by the International Federation as a neutral representative. Twenty two countries took part in this Competition, which was mostly dominated by Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Turkey.
