Tiger Woods and wife Elin divorce after sex scandal

Golfer Tiger Woods and his wife Elin Nordegren have divorced, it is confirmed.

Miss Nordegren's law firm released a statement confirming the divorce after the couple attended a court hearing today in Florida.

"We are sad that our marriage is over and we wish each other the very best for the future," the statement said.

"While we are no longer married, we are the parents of two wonderful children and their happiness has been, and will always be, of paramount importance to both of us."

Lawyers for the two confirmed that the divorce became official on Monday in Bay County Circuit Court, Florida.

The divorce comes nine months after Woods had an early morning car crash outside their home near Orlando, setting off explosive revelations that the world's No. 1 golfer had been cheating on his wife.

A stream of alleged lovers of the golf star appeared in the media.

The fall in public standing led Woods to lose millions of dollars in endorsements and taking five months away from the game.

Terms of the divorce were not disclosed, except that they will share parenting of their children, aged 3 and 1.
