St Edward’s College back to their old ways
Although having a strong tradition in sport, this exclusive college for boys seemed to have reached its zenith some years ago, hardly making the headlines anymore, at least not in athletics.
Perhaps this was due to the emergence of a number of private schools who give sport due attention. Another reason might be that the college no longer takes in students as borders. Well, if the schools’ cross-country event held this week at the Marsa is anything to go by, than this college is back with a bang.
Winning two out of three individual events and finishing second and third in the other paved the way for their teams to capture all the top spots in the Primary School, Cadet and Youth categories, the latter two being for Senior school students, in these events organised by Athletics Malta.
No less than 346 children from private, church and government schools descended on the grass areas of the Marsa, ably controlled by their teachers and minders for a morning of cross country running.
Hailing from 25 different educational establishments, the attendance reflected the efforts of the Sports Promotion Unit within the Ministry of Education and the Malta Schools Sports Association to make this event a success. If St Edward College distinguished itself among the boys, San Anton School can justifiably claim the overall mantle.
Being one of the mixed schools present, and fielding strong teams in all six events, individually their girls placed first in both the events for the Primary Schools and that for the Cadet Section. Consequently, their teams also finished first in these events. Meanwhile the boys from San Anton were hot on the heels of St Edward’s, placing second in the Primary Section, and third in the other two contests. Another mixed school going strong and ever-present in the Association’s programme is San Andrea, whose girls won the Senior title, came second in the Cadets’ and were third among the Primaries.
Meanwhile the boys’ team came second in the cadet category. Among the government schools, Kullegg San Gorg Preca Paola fared well in both the Cadet categories, the girls’ team finishing second while the boys came third. Another school to win two team prizes was St Catherine’s Pembroke, third in both the team races for the senior schools. Other schools who came away with a prize were Kullegg Maria Regina for girls who were second in the senior race and Kullegg San Benedittu who were also second in the corresponding event for boys.
