England battle to beat Wales in Cardiff
England survived an early Welsh assault with an impressive second half performance to secure a 21 -6 victory in an entertaining Six Nations Championship opener that struck the first blow in World Cup year.
The Welsh strolled to a 10-0 lead after seven minutes with scrumhalf Rhys Webb dashing over for the first try.
England were forced to make six changes from their November success over Australia; and hit back through Anthony Watson sliding with the latter however missing too many turnovers resulting in Wales leading England 16-8 at Half time.
Lancaster’s side who will be meeting Wales again in September in the pool stage of the World Cup, were a completely different side after the break.
Debutant Jonathan Joseph’s try early on turned the tide and with their forwards asserting themselves, George Ford kicked England ahead while Wales were down to 14 men.
England had a Dave Attwood ruled out only for Ford sealing another morale boosting victory shortly after from a penalty.
