Royal Malta Yacht Club hosts Vikings Sailing Club
The Royal Malta Yacht Club has welcomed fellow sailors from the Vikings Sailing Club to their Clubhouse enabling them to provide lessons to children aged between 8 and 15 years of age under the On the Move programme offered by Sport Malta.
By having access to the Royal Malta Yacht Club’s slipway facilities the Vikings Sailing Club team will be able to bring their boats out from storage where they have been lying idle for a number of months. This arrangement will be in force until the Vikings Sailing Club can occupy their new premises in Haywharf.
“We are grateful towards the Royal Malta Yacht Club for facilitating the process to offer such lessons. These lessons are very important as this is where the future of our sport lies’ said Gerald Portanier, Commodore of the Vikings Sailing Club. “Although we missed out on our summer activities due to our premises being unsafe, we have started minimum refurbishment works required to get part of the premises safe and operational, thanks to initial funding that Yachting Malta Ltd has provided the Club”.
On the Move sailing lessons will be given on Laser 16 and Topper (single handed) sailing boats and courses are held every Saturday between 8:30 and 12:30pm.
“The Royal Malta Yacht Club is happy to be of assistance to ensure that the work they do at grassroots level is ongoing” said David Anastasi, Royal Malta Yacht Club Rear Commodore (Sailing). “Both Clubs understand the importance of the ability to provide lessons to younger audiences and we are happy to work together to develop our sport further”.
