Kvitova defeats Sharapova to win the Wimbledon final
Petra Kvitova defeated tournament favourite Maria Sharapova yesterday afternoon to win the Wimbledon final.
Eighth seed Kvitova became the first Czech player to lift the major crown since Jova Novotna lifted the title in 1998.
Kvitova defeated Sharapova 6-3 6-4 on the Centre Court.
Sharapova failed to produce the dominant form that put her in the final in recent days.
Kvitova had some words for the crowd after receiving the Venus Rosewater Dish from HRH The Duke of Kent. "It's hard to find the words," says a clearly emotional Petra. "Of course I was nervous but I focused on each point. I think it's the best match I've ever played and I'm ready for my lap of honour." The new Wimbledon champion concluded .
Dignified in defeat Sharapova also had some words for the spectators: "Unfortunately in tennis there's only one winner and she (Kvitova) played brilliantly today. I've had amazing support." Sharapova received a great reception from the crowd as she walked of the court to let Kvitova enjoy her moment and walk her lap of honour.
