Updated | Public Broadcasting Authority appoints new chairman, Opposition disagrees

Anthony J. Tabone has been appointed chairman of the Public Broadcasting Authority, replacing outgoing chairman Joe Scicluna.

Adds statement by the Labour Party

In its statement, the Labour Party said Opposition Leader Joseph Muscat more than once told the Prime Minister he was against Tabone's nomination.

"The Opposition Leader had proposed alternatives to the appointment, which proposals were refused by the Prime Minister," the LP said.

The statement added that Muscat was disappointed an agreement was not reached between the two parties. In previous appointments such as that of the Ombudsman, the Auditor General, the Head of the Electoral Commissioner and the Commissioner for Data Protection, an agreement had been reached.

Tabone was appointed by President George Abela upon recommendation by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi following consultation with the Leader of the Opposition, Joseph Muscat, a statement by the Department of Information said.

Tabone has occupied a number of senior management posts within the Farsons Group for the last 40 years. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Farsons Beverage Import Co Ltd and a Business and Marketing Consultant within the Group.

He is an Officer of the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry and has also served as Vice-President of the Malta Federation of Industry and has held the post of President of the Malta Trade fairs Corporation.  He currently represents The Malta Chamber on the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development.

Tabone is a member of the Council of the University of Malta, the Malta Council for Science and Technology and Chairman of the Selection Board of the Worker of the Year National Award.

He has acted as consultant on a number of communication campaigns linked to projects funded by the European Union including the Climate Change Campaign and the “For Diveristy Against Discrimination” Campaign.

Between 2000 and 2003 Tabone served as Chairman of the Public Broadcasting Services Ltd during which time he was responsible for a number of changes within the State Broadcasting Station.

Tabone is a marketing graduate of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne Polytechnic (Northumbria University), England and has participated in various training courses overseas.

He is married to Carmen and has two daughters Mariella-Pia and Gabriella.

PLease rectify the fact that although the leader of theopposition was consulted the PL is against Mr, Tabone's appointment. @fellus ta' gahan Don't hold your breath this is another political appointment in order to favour WE, Mr Loooo Bondi has had too many ear pulling from the out going chairman and the need for a gonziPN barage of spin and propaganda are in the pipe line. Riding on the Libyan affair and the "par idejn sodi" that are supposed to be handling Malta's affairs so "tactfully", looks like that an early general elections might be in the pipeline.

He should start by taking a long, hard look at the way Peppi Azzopardi and Lou Bondi are subverting public broadcasting for PN propaganda.
